Simama Alumni Story: Pauline Etir

Pauline’s Journey from Simama Student to Certified Kenyan Safari Guide

When I stand at the edge of the wilderness – and look across the vast landscapes I proudly call my office – I am reminded of how far I have come and of the people who stood beside me throughout my journey.

Growing up in Laikipia County, I knew that education could open doors, yet I did not have the means to walk through those doors on my own. My life began to change in 2017 when the Simama Project gave me the opportunity to attend Gatero Girls High School. That support provided the first firm stepping stone toward building my future.

In Kiswahili, Simama means “to stand” or “to stand strong.” That is exactly what the Simama Project helped me to do. They encouraged me to rise above my circumstances, believe in my abilities and stand strong in pursuit of my dreams. Their support did not end with my secondary education. When the time came for me to continue my studies, Simama once again stood with me by providing a full scholarship to Mount Kenya University. There, I earned a Diploma in Tourism and Travel Management and began turning my love for nature, travel, and people into a meaningful career.

Inspired by the confidence they placed in me, I continued working hard to improve my knowledge and professional skills. I later earned my Bronze-level certification from the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association, qualifying as a professional tour guide-driver. Today, I have the privilege of introducing visitors to Kenya’s remarkable wildlife, landscapes, and cultures.

The Simama Project has been much more than a supporter in my life. It has been an anchor during uncertain times, a source of strength when the journey felt difficult, and a constant pillar of encouragement. Their investment has transformed a young girl with limited opportunities into an educated, confident, and capable professional with a clear sense of purpose. My story is living proof of what can happen when someone is given the opportunity to learn and grow.

To everyone at the Simama Project: thank you for seeing potential in me, investing in my education and walking with me through every important stage of my journey. Thank you for giving me the courage and foundation to rise, to believe and to stand strong.

I stand proudly as a professional guide today because, when I needed support the most, you chose to stand with me. My gratitude will remain with me wherever this journey leads.
